The past 2 years have been relentless with some of the most exciting collaborations between artists that would have never been thought of as working together, yet, as the philosophy of opposites attracting goes, the results have been quite outstanding. This time, 2 of the most legendary producers of our time, Bass Junkie and Radioactive Man, team up as “The Brink”, to bring you Bass Locators, on Germany’s Battery Park Studio. 3 solid tracks, showing clearly the influence each artist had on creating the record, but also pushing the envelope with bone shattering bass kicks, menacing basslines and innovative vocoders.
The first song on the record is “Bass Locators”, the main track and starts things off with a boom. Reminding you in a way of Hip Hop Be Bop’s beat, things quickly unravel into a deranged production of piercing sounds, mind warping synth manipulations, clever edits and suspenseful vocoder action.
“Begin”, perhaps the true gem in this E.P., is a faster-paced jam with conscious lyrics, persuading you into realizing your true potential, connecting with others and preserving what we value most about life…freedom! A gritty bassline provides the groove, as deeply crafted arpeggios blend together with witty and abstract stabs, chugging forward like a freight train with the classy Techno Bass beats you will find in this song.
Last on this release is “Overdrive”, which is a powerful tune with vicious sound effects emitting from every direction, as sinister vocals and wicked synth lines add some depth. The tempo is a little slower this time, but the track itself is filled with such strong low end frequencies, that it inevitably pushes things into a high gear even more so than the previous track. This track is a ferocious delivery of electronic mayhem and should satisfy any crowd, anywhere…so play this one hard!
This record is available now from Juno Download and will soon also make it unto vinyl through Templeplate’s On Demand cutting service. This release has been a very exciting thing to see come into fruition and we can only hope that these 2 artists will return with more of their delightful material together, but for now, waste no time…go and locate the bass! It’s waiting for you.
bass locators - review by darkfloor
One thing with Darkfloor is that we don’t really inform you of news pertaining to the darkfloor electronica thing, other than the odd specifics to us. It’s pretty much mixes and releases and radio archives. Whilst I can be sure that this site won’t turn into a 100 posts a day feed of ‘news’ titbits I can say that the odd bit might filter through now and then. Which is where this post in particular fits in.
Radioactive Man and Bass Junkie are two well established and damn fine electronic producers who have been at their craft of producing grade A electro bass for a while. Some 25 years if you combine their production release history. Now whilst I suspect the 2 might have worked together on the odd piece here and there in the past; they have at the very least remixed each others work over their careers.
Thou I don’t know when these tracks are coming out (it will be this year no doubt), I do know they are being released on Battery Park Studios as the Bass Locators EP and that they are just superb. Take a listen for yourself. |
